Against a backdrop of soft pastel browns, blues and greens depicting a race-track on a beautiful day, the five white reels and bold jewel colours in the icons of Real Time Gaming’s Derby Dollars slot stand out smartly. The slot is a natural fit for horseracing fans having a go at casino games. It has a fairly straightforward structure with no fancy extras, but the Wild and Scatter can both deliver significant prizes.
Derby Dollars has 20 pay lines, and players can choose how many to play on each spin. Bets per line can be adjusted from 1 to 25 coins, and players stand better chances of winning prizes regularly if they engage all 20 lines and adjust the bet per line to an affordable level, rather than playing fewer lines at higher stakes.
Ten Ordinary Symbols in All
Apart from the Wild and Scatter, Derby Dollars uses ten ordinary icons, six of them are 9 to A. These are rendered as golden stand-alone numbers and letters, enamelled in bright colours and inlaid with tiny gold-and-diamond horseshoes. The 9 and 10, J and Q, and K and A are matching pairs in terms of the prizes they win: three 9s or three 10s, for example, win 5 coins.
The Ks and As, along with all higher-value symbols, can win prizes with just two matches, and for five of a kind the As and Ks win 250 coins. Binoculars and a golden trophy also have equal value, each winning 3, 30, 100 or 500 coins for two, three, four or five matches.
Derby Dollars’ top-value ordinary icons are a jockey, who can win 5, 50, 250 or 1,000 coins, and a lady race-goer, who wins 5, 100, 750 or 2,000 coins for the same matches.
Wild Wins from First Appearance
A horse pictured mid-race serves as the Derby Dollars Wild. As with most slot Wilds, it can replace any other symbol except a Scatter to complete a winning combo, but the Wild also wins prizes for appearances in its own right, as well as for combinations with itself on a pay line from Reel 1.
A single Wild on Reel 1 that does not complete a winning pay line, for example, wins 2 coins anyway. For combos of two, three, four or five Wilds on a pay line, the prizes are 10, 200, 1,000 and a lucky 3,333 coins. Whenever the Wild is part of a winning combo, a burst of racetrack fanfare and an animation of the horse and jockey speeding down the straight greet the win.
Scatter is also Dual-Function
The Derby Dollars Scatter, a gold coin bearing a horse’s head in a diamond-studded frame, can trigger two types of prizes. Unusually, though, Derby Dollars requires just two Scatters, not the normal minimum of three, to trigger both these features. Two, three, four or five Scatters anywhere on the reels win an immediate multiplier of the total spin bet: 1X, 3X, 15X or 50X.
In addition, the player will be rewarded with 5, 10, 15 or 25 free spins, respectively. During a free spins round, all prizes are tripled, and extra Wild and Scatter icons are added to the reels. The free spins can also be reactivated by another two or more Scatters appearing during the bonus round.
